The Mikan is one of the largest genera of tropical liane, represented by over 300 species of climbing plants. Guache is the name used for several species of Mikan that are similar and are used for similar purposes. Among these are the species M. Guache which is located in Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador, the M. cordifolia, which is located in Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama, the M. glomerata, which is in Paraguay and Venezuela, and M. polished in Brazil.

Guache is a significant source of a natural chemical called coumarin (this for a percentage of 11%). Coumarin is used to produce one of the most common anticoagulant drugs and blood, the cumadina. The amount of coumarin is so high that some Brazilian researchers are studying the possibility of commercial cultivation and extraction of coumarin from the leaves of Guache to use the pharmaceutical industry. Guache also contains 14 new sesquiterpeni that have been documented as antibacterial agents, insecticides, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and anti-tumor biologically active.

Many of the uses of historical Guache by the folk medicine have been validated by scientists. Raul Coimbra, wrote the first article, which validates the use of Guache as a bronchodilator and expectorant already in 1942. In 1984, a Brazilian study showed the effect of calming coughs and bronchodilators a tea leaf Guache. Other researchers have published some research in 1992 on broncodilatatorie and anti-inflammatory actions of extract of leaf Guache. Recently, it was reported that an extract of leaves of Guache can significantly inhibit the contraction caused d istamina and can have a relaxing effect on the trachea.

It's was also tested against the traditional use of snake bites: Guache has been shown to significantly reduce the sweating, edema and vasoconstriction produced by the poison.
Even the anti-inflammatory properties of the plant have been verified in vivo and in vitro in 3 different experiments. The most recent study reported an inhibitory factor of inflammation by 81% in rats.
In other recent research, an extract of raw Guache showed a antiprotozoica, antibacterial and anti-anti-candida yeast.

The two species used in Brazil are the Mikan cordifolia and M. glomerata.
In herbal medicine today, Guache is known and respected as a natural bronchodilator, expectorant and sedative cough, and is used for all types of respiratory tract problems such as bronchitis, pleurisy, colds, flu, cough and asthma, as well as sore throat, laryngitis and fever. Traditional preparation:
Syrup: a handful of fresh leaves (or 60 grams of dry leaves) in 6 cups of water to boil and reduce to 2 cups. Then, add ¾ cup sugar and let boil for 20 minutes until obtaining a syrup to which are added 3 tablespoons of honey. Be taken as a cough syrup, 1 tablespoon 3 times daily
Infused: 2 cups of fresh leaves (or ½ cup of dried leaves) infused in a quart of water. Take ½ cup of infused 4 times a day for rheumatism, respiratory problems and cough. It can also be used topically as a healing and pain
Tincture: 3-4 ml three times per day

Contraindications:

High doses (two or three times higher than those of traditional remedies) may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
Guache contains a significant amount of coumarin is obtained from which the cumadina. Coumarin anticoagulant effects and blood. Before taking Guache, consult your doctor if you are taking medications with cumadina or anticoagulant drugs are contraindicated for their condition.
Interaction with drugs: It can enhance cumadina.
